Intralase Laser Eye Surgery

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the LASIK procedure where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision.

Crystalens - IOL Implants

The Crystalens® accommodating intraocular lens is an intraocular lens used after cataract surgery or as a lens alternative in presbyopic lens exchanges. This intraocular lens was engineered with a hinge design to allow the optic, or the part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as your focus on an image changes. The Crystalens® accommodative intraocular lens is permanently implanted during surgery and functions in a similar fashion as the natural lens of the eye. Once the surgery has been completed your eyes can focus on far or near objects in a comfortable way with no discomfort. If you are experiencing presbyopia or cataracts please feel free to consult us about the possibility of utilizing the new Crystalens® accommodative intraocular lens to rejuvenate your eyes.

James W. Donovan, M.D.Dr. Donovan was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and grew up in Southern California. He graduated Salutatorian from Poway High School where he had begun his aspiration to become a physician.  He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1989, where he was awarded his Bachelor of Science Degree in Pre-Professional studies. While still an undergraduate, he was awarded a research fellowship through the San Diego Zoo Department of Pathology and co-sponsored by the International Society for Correlative Biologic Research.  Here he studied and performed Entamoeba histolytica electrophoretic enzyme patterns in primates.

In 1993 he earned his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and did his Transitional Internal Medicine internship at MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. While in medical school, Dr. Donovan continued his research interests working with the Departments of Ophthalmology and Neurology in the sub-retinal implantation and physiologic testing of an Artificial Retina Device in rabbits. This was a pioneer study in the ongoing development of retinal devices to be used in the hope of treating retinal diseases.

Dr. Donovan completed his Ophthalmology residency at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans where he served as Chief Resident during his final year. His research activities continued through residency where he studied post-equatorial conjunctival and scar tissue recession for Adhesive Syndrome in pediatric eye muscle surgery.  He also showed a benefit through his clinical research of fluorescein – aided capsulorhexis in dense cataract surgery.

Dr. Donovan became board certified in Ophthalmology as soon as he became eligible. He has been a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, The American College of Eye Surgeons, the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, and the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Donovan practiced for several years in Camarillo and Ventura, California. There he was Vice President of the Ventura County Eye Society for several years. Most recently, prior to relocating back to Long Beach, Dr. Donovan practiced in Covington and New Orleans, Louisiana, where he was a member of the faculty of the LSU/Ochsner Clinic residency program. He lectured and was involved in clinical instruction for the Ophthalmology residency program. Dr. Donovan returned to Long Beach to join Eye Physicians of Long Beach in 2007. He practices general ophthalmology with special emphasis on cataract and refractive surgery.

Dr. Donovan considers his career in Ophthalmology to be an immensely fulfilling part of his life.  Bringing vision and life changing care to his patients is his greatest reward, and that for which he is most proud. He is committed to bringing the best care available to his patients at Eye Physicians of Long Beach.  Away from the office, Dr. Donovan enjoys the outdoor beach and mountain activities found here in Southern California.
