The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the LASIK procedure where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision.

While growing up in Southern California, Dr. James Donovan knew early on that he wanted to be a doctor. He recalls,"I had a minor surgery as a child, but it was a big deal for me. What I remember being impressed with was how skilled, but yet how compassionate, the doctors were to me. My well-being seemed to be their only concern. This resonated with me as the kind of person and the kind of profession I could be interested in. The helping and human factors made an impact on me."
After earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1989 from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Donovan went on to Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. While in medical school, Dr. Donovan pursued his research interests working with the Departments of Ophthalmology and Neurology in the sub-retinal implantation and physiological testing of an Artificial Retina Device in rabbits. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year.
As soon as he became eligible, Dr. Donovan became board certified in Ophthalmology and continues to be Board Certified. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, The American College of Eye Surgeons, the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, and the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology.
Before joining Eye Physicians of Long Beach, Dr. Donovan was in practice in Louisiana. There, he lectured and was involved in clinical instruction for the Ophthalmology residents of the LSU/Ochsner Clinic residency program. In 2007, Dr. Donovan returned to Long Beach to join Eye Physicians of Long Beach, a practice solely dedicated to eye care for over 33 years. He practices general Ophthalmology with a special emphasis on cataract and laser vision correction.
Recognized for his warmth and compassionate nature, Dr. Donovan finds practicing state of the art eye care at Eye Physicians of Long Beach an opportunity to improve the lives of many. In his free time, he confesses to a snowboarding addiction and plans to spend some time this summer getting back into surfing. He has always loved Bluegrass music, and someday hopes to learn to play the banjo.
