Intralase Laser Eye Surgery

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the LASIK procedure where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision.

Multifocal IOL
Acrysof® Restor® IOL
Recent advances in IOL implants have presented more options for patients having cataract surgery. Life after cataract surgery used to always require glasses, as traditional cataract surgery only gave patients good vision at one distance. Now, new options for better vision after cataract surgery have been created including one of the best performing multifocal IOL lenses, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL. The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is a unique technological innovation providing patients with quality vision across the entire visual spectrum and at near, far and intermediate distances. Many patients who have had this lens implant do not need glasses or bifocals after cataract surgery.
How does the AcrySof® ReSTOR® Multifocal IOL work?
When we perform various activities throughout the day requiring good vision such as reading the newspaper or driving a car, our eyes constantly change focus to accommodate various distances. As we age this ability to accommodate gets more difficult and typically, people over 40 start to require reading glasses or bifocal lenses. The AcrySof® ReSTOR® Multifocal IOL is available at Eye Physicians of Long Beach, and many of our patients can see better at a multitude of distances.
The Acrysof® Restor® IOL was one of the first premium lens implants to achieve a high level of success. Many patients who wore glasses for years, speak highly of this implant and do not wear glasses anymore with the exception of a few instances. FDA data has indicated that 80% of patients were spectacle-free after cataract surgery with this lens implant and patients often state they can see more clearly and more vibrantly with this implant.
Who is a ReSTOR® candidate?
Any patient who has a normal eye exam and is dependent on reading glasses or bifocals may be a candidate. Cataract surgery is not necessary to qualify for the ReSTOR lens, just a desire to restore eyesight at a range of distances without corrective eyewear. Some patients therefore undergo refractive lens exchange with implantation of the ReSTOR lens.
There are no known contraindications, however, based on FDA clinical trials, Alcon, the lens manufacturer, has indicated the following types of patients who should not have the AcrySof ReSTOR Apodized Diffractive IOL:
- People with unrealistic expectations about their results
- People with psychiatric disorders
- People with a history of glare in night vision even when they did not have a cataract
- People with advanced glaucoma and most macular disease patients
FDA approval date:
March 21, 2005 in the United States; this IOL has been approved for use in Europe since April 4, 2003.
