Intralase Laser Eye Surgery

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the LASIK procedure where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision.

Crystalens - IOL Implants

The Crystalens® accommodating intraocular lens is an intraocular lens used after cataract surgery or as a lens alternative in presbyopic lens exchanges. This intraocular lens was engineered with a hinge design to allow the optic, or the part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as your focus on an image changes. The Crystalens® accommodative intraocular lens is permanently implanted during surgery and functions in a similar fashion as the natural lens of the eye. Once the surgery has been completed your eyes can focus on far or near objects in a comfortable way with no discomfort. If you are experiencing presbyopia or cataracts please feel free to consult us about the possibility of utilizing the new Crystalens® accommodative intraocular lens to rejuvenate your eyes.

What is Wavefront Technology?

CustomVue Wavefront technology was pioneered for space science. It was developed to reduce imperfections referred to as “aberrations” in the optical systems of a telescope. The introduction of wavefront technology to the LASIK procedure is a revolutionary breakthrough.

Wavefront is a term used to describe the wave of light after going through the surfaces of an optical system. The deviation of a wavefront in an optical system from a desired perfect wavefront is called the wavefront aberration.

Wavefront-sensing devices are used during your preoperative eye exam at EPLB to produce an accurate picture of the wave of light after it passes the structures of the eye. We then use these images to quantify the optical imperfections found in the human eye. LASIK then minimizes those imperfections in the postoperative eye. The term Custom LASIK should only be used when the treatment is a wavefront guided treatments.

Wavefront Technology To begin, a wavefront-sensing device called a wavefront aberrometer is used to create the blueprint of the cornea. Imperfections, or aberrations, occur in everyone’s eyes. These imperfections are calculated for an individual’s eye. They are classified into two main categories referred to as Higher and Lower Order aberrations.

The lower order aberrations are very common and include hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and myopia (nearsightedness). They are corrected through conventional LASIK, glasses or contact lenses.

Wavefront guided treatments address higher order aberrations. These cannot be measured with a standard refraction (prescription for glasses). However, they can be measured by an aberrometer. In CUSTOM iLASIK, this data gets converted into a map of your eye. This map is like a fingerprint of the optical characteristics of the eye.

Once the wave map is created, the information is transferred to an excimer laser. The laser actually converts wavefront information into a laser pattern used to minimize these higher order aberrations. The correction is completely computer driven. CUSTOM iLASIK results in significantly better low contrast (night, low lighting) vision than standard LASIK can provide.

This technology makes it possible for our doctors at Eye Physicians of Long Beach to fully customize the iLASIK procedure to each individual patient.

“The advanced iLASIK platform gives my patients the very best opportunity for great vision.”

Carlos Martinez, M.D., M.S.
