Intralase Laser Eye Surgery

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the LASIK procedure where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision.

High Definition LASIK
What is Wavefront Technology?
A major LASIK technology breakthrough within the last 10 years was the introduction of wavefront technology into LASIK, which is referred to as Custom LASIK. Wavefront technology was pioneered for space science to aid in reducing aberrations or imperfections in the optical systems of telescopes. With laser vision correction the same wavefront-sensing devices are used to produce an accurate picture of the optical imperfections found in the human eye and minimizes those imperfections after LASIK.
A wavefront aberrometer is used to create the blueprint of the cornea Imperfections, or aberrations occur in the eyes of every person; they are divided into two main categories known as HIGHER ORDER and LOWER ORDER aberrations. The lower order aberrations are very common and are corrected through conventional LASIK, glasses or contact lenses, otherwise known as of hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and myopia (nearsightedness). Lasers capable of using the blueprint of a patient’s cornea can then do a Wavefront guided laser treatment or treatments that are customized to the patient based on a map of the imperfections. The computer driven treatment uses the map of the aberrations to calculate the best laser profile to minimize the amount of imperfections of the eye after surgery.

What does Wavefront technology do?
Wavefront technology addresses higher order aberrations such as the imperfections that cannot be measured with a standard refraction (prescription for glasses). These imperfections are typically measured by an aberrometer and in CUSTOM LASIK, this data gets converted into a map of your eye, like a fingerprint of the optical characteristics of the eye. Once the wave map is created, this information is transferred to an excimer laser and incorporated into the final excimer laser treatment. The laser actually converts wavefront information into a laser pattern used to minimize these higher order aberrations. The correction is completely computer driven and results in significant better vision with low contrast (night, low lighting) than with standard LASIK.
With this technology available, ophthalmologists can now customize LASIK for individuals. Dr. Martinez and Dr. Donovan have selected the VISX CustomVue and iLASIK technology for their practice.
“I feel like the advanced iLASIK platform involving Bladefree LASIK, Wavefront technology and the time tested VISX Star 4 laser will give my patients the best overall chance at great vision after surgery”
Carlos Martinez, M.D., M.S.
What Can Custom LASIK do for you?
- Improve overall quality, contrast and crispness of your vision
- Results in better night driving vision than standard LASIK
- May allow you to see better than you can with glasses or contact lenses
- Improve your chances of seeing 20/20 or better
Custom LASIK Candidacy
You may be a good candidate for Custom LASIK:
- If you are 21 years of age or older and have stable vision
- If you want the best LASIK technology available
- If you already have some night driving problems
- If your contact lenses cause problems with dryness and irritation
- If glasses are a lifestyle challenge
- If you have larger pupils
CustomVue LASIK Clinical Study Results (VISX LASIK FDA STUDY)
VISX's FDA clinical study results were remarkable. Among other things:
* At one year after the VISX CustomVue procedure;
- 100% of the clinical study participants could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts
- 98% of the clinical study participants could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts
- 70% of the clinical study participants could see 20/16 or better without glasses or contacts
Why Should I Consider Custom LASIK?
Wavefront Technology is the scientific basis for Customized LASIK laser vision and has improved the visual outcomes of patients and provides significant advantages over conventional LASIK. If you want the best LASIK procedure available then Custom LASIK with the Intralase FS laser would be the best option.
