Valeda Light Therapy for Dry AMD
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), you may have been told there was little that could be done to improve your vision. That has changed.
Eye Physicians of Long Beach is proud to offer the Valeda Light Delivery System, the first and only FDA-authorized treatment proven to improve vision in patients with dry AMD. Using the power of light, Valeda works at the cellular level to help restore and protect your sight.

Why Choose Eye Physicians of Long Beach for Valeda?

Our retina team, including Dr. Martinez, Dr. Hertzog, and Dr. Lorenzo, is a highly experienced group of specialists dedicated to protecting and improving the vision of patients with macular degeneration. We were among the early adopters of this FDA-authorized technology because we believe our dry AMD patients deserve access to the most advanced, evidence-based treatments available.

Valeda represents a genuine turning point in the management of dry AMD. For decades, patients were told to wait and monitor. Now, we can act earlier, non-invasively, and with meaningful results.

What Is Valeda?

Valeda is a breakthrough medical device developed by LumiThera (now part of Alcon) that uses a technology called photobiomodulation (PBM), a form of targeted, painless light therapy painless light therapy that has been clinically proven to help improve vision. Valeda delivers precise doses of yellow (590 nm), red (660 nm), and near-infrared (850 nm) light to the retina, stimulating the mitochondria, the energy-producing centers of your retinal cells. Think of it as recharging your retinal cells. By boosting cellular energy production, Valeda helps:

  • Reduce inflammation in the retina
  • Decrease harmful drusen deposits
  • Slow the progression of dry AMD
  • Improve visual acuity

Valeda is non-invasive, painless, and performed right here in our office.

Why Valeda Stands Apart

  • Completely painless light therapy — no injections, no surgery, no recovery

What the Clinical Evidence Shows

Valeda's effectiveness is backed by the LIGHTSITE III clinical trial, a prospective, double-masked, randomized, multi-center study conducted at 10 leading U.S. retinal centers over 24 months. The results were remarkable:

63%
of patients treated with Valeda showed measurable improvement in vision over the course of the study.*
75%
reduction in progression toward geographic atrophy compared to untreated patients.*
53% fewer patients experienced worsening of their vision during the two-year study period compared to the control group.*

Patients gained an average of approximately one full line of vision on the eye chart compared to those not receiving treatment.

In a long-term extension study (LIGHTSITE IIIB), patients maintained vision benefits out to 4.5 years, even after a 20-month treatment pause, and recovered vision gains upon retreatment.

Based on data from the LIGHTSITE clinical trial program. Individual results may vary.
